Examine the ways in which feminism has contributed Essay Example for Free

Examine the ways in which feminism has contributed Essay Examine the ways In which femlnlsm has contributed to our understanding of families Feminists take critical views of the family as they argue it oppresses women and therefore creates issues such as unequal divisions of domestic labour and domestic violence against women. Feminists believe that there is a triple burden of paid work. domestic labour and emotional work. Also gender Inequality Is not regarded as natural or Inevitable, but something that has been created by society. Feminists also argue that the oppression of women is due to patriarchy. The New Right has been criticised by feminists such as Ann Oakley (1997) as it has a conservative and anti-feminist perspective on the family. The New Right is firmly opposed to family diversity. The New Right sees the nuclear family as the natural family and Is based upon fundamental biological differences between men and women. In their view, the nuclear family has clear-cut divisions of labour between the breadwinner-husband and homemaker-wife. Therefore leading to criticisms from feminists. Ann Oakley argues that the New Right wrongly assumes that husbands and wives roles are fixed by biology. She also believes that the New Right view of the family is a negative reaction against the feminist campaign for womens equality. Even more so, other feminists argue that the traditional nuclear family favoured by the New Right Is based on the patriarchal oppression of women and Is a fundamental cause of gender inequality. In this view, it prevents women working and keeps them financially dependent on me. Feminism is often referred to as feminisms as it is acknowledge that the feminist label Is broad and a cover many types of feminist. The main types of feminists are; Liberal, Marxist, Radical and Dfference. Liberal feminists such as Jenny Somerville (2000) believe that the main obstacle for women is the equality in attitudes, practices and law in which can be changed without any fundamental changes to the structure of society. They also are concerned with campaigning against sex discrimination and for equal rights and opportunities. Through people favouring and challenging the gender role soclallsatlon In childhood, attitudes can then be changed towards roles In the family. Liberal feminists argue that womens oppression is gradually being overcome hrough the changing attitudes and changes in laws such as the Sex Discrimination Act (1975) which outlaws discrimination in employment. Even more so Liberal feminists hold a similar view to theorists such as Young and Willmott, although they do not believe full gender equality has been achieved in the family, they argue It has been a gradual progress. Through the gradual progress of changing attitudes, the ways In wnlcn cn110ren are soclallsea In tne Tamlly Is now OITTerent. Daugnters are socialised more equally to sons in the modern day compared to the past. However, ther feminists such as Marxist and Radical, criticise Liberal feminists for failing to challenge the underlying causes of womens oppression and for believing that changes in law or attitudes will be enough to bring equality. Marxist feminists and Radical feminists believe instead that far-reaching revolutionary changes to deep- root social structures are needed. Another type of feminist is Marxist feminism, and they argue that the main cause of womens oppression in the family is not men, but capitalism. Several functions are performed through womens oppression for capitalism, firstly that women reproduce he labour force, through their unpaid domestic labour and by socialising the next generation of workers and maintain the servicing of the current generation. Another function is that women absorb anger that would otherwise be directed at capitalism. Wives are describe as takers of shit by Fran Ansley (1972) who acknowledges that women soak up the frustration of their husbands feelings due to the alienation and exploitation they suffer at work. This is a primary example for Marxists, as it explains male domestic violence against women. Abbot and Wallace (1990) note that the main ause of domestic violence is the male perception that the partner is failing her duties. Dobash and Dobash (1979) also found that these duties tended to be about sex, money and home making. Due to the male perception of the partner failing her duties, it is often resulted in the women believing that they deserved to be beaten. Also women are a reserve army of cheap labour, meaning that when extra workers are needed women shall be taken on to work, but as soon as they are no longer needed the employers let them go to return to their primary role as unpaid domestic labour. However, Radical feminists have been critical based on the emphasis is being put on capitalist forms of exploitation. They argue that patriarchy predates Capitalism which makes it a more significant explanation of female exploitation and oppression. Radical feminists argue that all societies have been founded on patriarchy and for radical feminists the key division in society is between me and women. Radical feminists see men as the enemy as they are the source of womens oppression and exploitation. Also that the family and marriage are the key institutions in patriarchal ociety. Men benefit form womens domestic labour and from their sexual services, and they dominate women through domestic and sexual violence or the threat of it. Radical feminists argue that the family is the root of womens oppression, so therefore must be abolished. They also argue that the only way to achieve this is through separatism, where women must live independently of men. Even more so, radical feminists argue for political lesbianism, which is the idea that heterosexual relationships are inevitably oppressive because they involve sleeping with the enemy. Germaine Greer (2000) argues for the creation of all-female or matrilocal households as an alternative to the heterosexual family. However, for liberal feminists such as Jenny Somerville (2000), radical feminists fail to recognise that womens position has improved considerably with better access to Jobs, divorce and control over tnelr own Tertlll ty Somerville also argues tnat separatlsm Is unlikely to work as heterosexual attraction makes it unlikely that the conventional nuclear family will disappear. On the other hand, Somerville does agree that women have yet to chieve full equality. The feminist approaches already considered tend to assume that most women live in conventional nuclear families and that they share a similar experience of family life. However, difference feminists argue that women have very different experiences of the family from one another and so therefore cannot be generalised. For example, working-class and middle-class women, black and white women and lesbian and heterosexual women all share different experiences so therefore cannot be compared. Black feminists argue that by regarding the family solely on a source of ppression, white feminists neglect black womens experiences of racial oppression. The black family is positively viewed as a source of support and resistance against racism by black feminists. However other feminists argue that this approach neglects the fact that, despite such differences, women do in fact share many of the same experiences. For example, women face a greater risk of domestic violence and sexual assault and low pay compared with men. Feminism is criticised for ignoring the increased family diversity of families in the modern day, and although the nuclear family remains important, it is by no means the only family type.

The Miller Essay -- essays research papers

The Miller The Miller is not in the tale, but is as vivid a creation of Chaucer as characters that are. The Knight presents us with an ideal to which he probably aspires; the Miller presents us with the real everyday world. While the Knight stresses the nature of romantic love, the Miller considers love in sexual terms. Neither view alone is wholly true. Each is a corrective to the other: love embraces both of these elements. This paper will describe The Miller’s characteristics, his humor, his education level, and his habits. Like the Wife of Bath, the Miller is a character of commanding physical presence: he is a massive man who excels in such displays of strength as wrestling matches, and breaking doors "at a renning with his heed". He is a bearded, strong, working man. By stressing the Miller's physical attributes, Chaucer suggests to the reader the idea of a down-to-earth man who takes pleasure in satisfying basic appetites. Though the Miller is a man of down-to-earth outlook and physical pleasure, he is a very intelligent man. His narrative style, if less complex and conventionally sophisticated than the Knight's, is superb in its realism, economy and control, especially of the humorous elements. The Miller is an educated man, and able to describe the paraphernalia of Nicholas's astrological activities. This rather unexpected subtlety is indicated in the final lines of the description in the General Prologue. These are introduced by "And yet..." sh...

Patient X Essay

Patient X’s doctor has been trying to convince him to practice better lifestyle habits to for several years to help combat his hypertension (on antihypertensive medication for 3 years), diabetes (6 years) and growing waistline. A recent routine check-up revealed a deterioration of his lipid profile (TC 260, TG 310, HDL 29, LDL 170) and fasting glucose of 172. Patient X is 55 years old, weighs 245 lbs and he is 5’10 . 1) Hypertension: Weight control to lower the risks associated with hypertension include a diet low in sodium and high in potassium. The risk of hypertension is lower when salt intake is lower and potassium helps reduce blood pressure by increasing the amount of sodium excreted in the urine. The DASH eating plan is the best option for maintaining hypertension. Physical activity is also a major lifestyle modification that should be adopted. Engaging in regular aerobic physical activity such as a brisk walk will lower the risk of hypertension. Diabetes: A diet to help control diabetes also focuses on weight management. Low glycemic index diets have been shown to reduce complications associated with diabetes. Exercise is also a key factor to controlling diabetes. A 3-5 days of the week exercise, which focuses on caloric expenditure and duration rather than intensity, has been proven to increase insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. *Exercise can reduce other risk factors such as weight control, lipid profile, and hypertension. Lipid Profile: Elevated triglycerides are best treated with increased physical activity and weight reduction. Aerobic exercise, weight reduction, smoking cessation, and moderate alcohol consumption will favorably affect HDL-C and lower LDL-C. After comparing these three aspects, it is easy to see that a diet focused on weight management, smoking cessation, and physical activity involving aerobic exercise will greatly lower Patient X’s risk factors for hypertension and diabetes. 2) Suggesting that Patient X begin the DASH diet would be the first place to start. The DASH diet includes an easy-to-use chart which helps plan menus. It also includes items that people generally like to eat, just in less moderation and with more fruit and vegetables. To help Patient X quit smoking, there are prescriptions or over the counter patches that will allow cessation. There are also therapy groups that Patient X could try if addiction proved to be too great. Exercising with someone, a friend or significant other is always easier than exercising alone. I would suggest that Patient X find an exercise buddy and possibly start a gym membership. If they feel this isn’t the right choice for them, then even walking around their block for 30 minutes allows some form of aerobic exercise in their life. After 6 months I would expect to see a lower blood pressure if Patient X had indeed been participating in physical activity. Improvement in blood pressure among hypertensive, takes effect within the first few weeks. I would also expect to see major improvement in total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides if the proper diet was maintained. I would also expect to see an increased insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. A drop in BMI will also be indicated.

Role of the Chorus in Oedipus the King Essay - 1310 Words

What is the Role of the Chorus in Oedipus the King ? In answering this question, I will look at the question in two ways. Firstly, I will look at the role of the chorus objectively, examining the basic role of the chorus in the play, and looking at the role of the Chorus as Sophocles would have intended the role of the Chorus to be understood. However, I will then look at how I think the Greek audience would have perceived the role of the Chorus and then how the role of the Chorus is perceived today by a 20th century and examine the key differences in the two different sets of perceptions. Finally, I will look at the importance of the role of the Chorus to a 20th century audience and a Greek audience respectively.†¦show more content†¦The Chorus often speaks in this way at the end of a scene to clarify what has just gone on. (e.g. at the end of the first scene, the chorus clarifies the diseased state that the city of Thebes has descended into: Still breeding plague, unpitied infants lie...and wives and mothers, grey with hoary age...by every alter mourn.) Finally, the Chorus is used to keep the continuity during the play. In modern theatre, the plays are normally split up into scenes and acts. However, the Greek kept the continuity between these natural gaps, by having a narrative section. This prevented the necessity of having breaks in the action and also kept the audience up to date with what had just gone on, and perhaps offering some insight or other. In this role, I think the Chorus is very helpful to the audience, as it succeeds in keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. I think that in the play Oedipus, Sophocles intended the Chorus to be a constant significant part of the play, observing and reacting to situations, whilst never being the centre of attention during the main story, and only coming to the fore during the narrative passages of the play. However, in addressing the role of the Chorus in this play, I think it is vital that one decides whether the role of the Chorus is and objective role, inserted in to the play by Sophocles and unaffected by the audiences perception, or whether the role is subjective, and theShow MoreRelatedRoles And Function Of The Chorus Within Sophocles Oedipus The King1206 Words   |  5 PagesParrott Development of Western Civ October 27, 2015 Essay 1 As one examines the role and function of the chorus within Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, it is inevitable to find that the odes directly correlate to the story with great significance. Introduction Over the last few decades, the process of globalization has created unprecedented opportunities for global business investment and trade. Many multinational corporations are attempting to expand their international business by many entry strategies. Central Steel Door corps is also on the way to globalize and integrate. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Central Steel Door Corps" essay for you Create order This company has been run for about 20 years; succeed in selling a line of steel industrial grade doors, as well as the hardware and fitting required for them. Unfortunately, when going into new market- Europe, the companys traditional success in finding sales help has not gone smoothly. There are some serious mistakes in human resources management that the firm has met and judicious solutions to deal with those are necessary. Discussion Four mistakes which the company has met. Basic strategy There are four mistakes Mel fisher, president of Central Steel Door corps faced while attracting and maintaining qualified staff in Europe. One of them is irrational basis strategy, Fisher always use same way of expansion for all places: choose an area, establish a distribution centre, engage a regional sales manager, and then hand over authorities for these local manager. He forgot the fact is that each country or area has the differences in culture, social environment, intellectual standard of people, and working styles. Therefore same strategy can not be suitable for anywhere. Recruiting advertisement strategies Besides inefficient recruiting advertisement plan also created challenges for companys expansion. Fisher decided to enroll local manager by advertising in International Herald Tribune. This method not only restrict the number of reader- only read by business people in Europe and by American expatriates, but it also represent a poor recruitment method- using Internet and newspapers only, despite of advantages of other media resources. Hence, although his ads placed in the Tribunes Internet website for about one month, he so far has received 5 job applications. In there, one of them came from a possibly viable candidate while others seem has only experience in traveling. Compensation package and benefits On the other hand, compensation package and benefits are other factors to show mistake of Fishers decision clearly. He temporarily transferred two American sales manager to work into Europe and do not concern about changing their compensation package. Higher living expenses of Europe in general and Belgium, Germany in particular when compare with those in US make these people can not balance their pocket money. With the fixed amount of money in compensation package, it is unaffordable for people living there. Therefore, after several months, fisher was informed by the Belgian Government that his sales managers owed thousands of dollars. Host countries laws Finally, the fourth mistake can be seen from the trouble of Fisher with host countries laws. Due to the bad performance of staff in two distribution centers, he wanted to dismiss bout half of the employees. However, all of German staffs have had written employment agreement so he can not fire anyone after one year of contract. The shortage and unmindfulness made Fisher and his manager violate local authorities. Solutions. Above mistakes can cause many problems for Fishers corporation. If I were in his position, I would modify or change the whole human resources management because of its cardinal that defines the long term development and reputation of the company. At the beginning, I enhance the operation strategies. People always say that: â€Å"When in Rome do as Romans do† to emphasize the importance of learning other nations cultures, social conventions, working style etc. Doing business is the process of approach and satisfies what people wants and needs. Experience shows that employers who are unaware of such social norms faced greater difficulties in recruiting employees. Hence, businessmen need to understand the fundamentals of local people though and host countries cultures. In addition, business produces and behaviors are restricted by government regulation. To avoid the third Fishers mistake, it is admittedly that we have to build a good relation with government to enterprise swimm ingly. Furthermore, using effective advertising strategies will open more chances to find skilled labors. Beside Internet or newspapers, there are varieties of methods such as internal job posting, recruitment agencies, college interview and so on or doing as these corporations which want to set up new branch in Iran. Hiring qualified bilingual staff is often the most difficult challenges faced by multinational corporations in Iran. After advertising and employing, they consider hiring people who have quite stable skills and invest in training them more. These people both have knowledge about culture and local laws. It can help company run more efficient. Last but not least, as the increasingly of living expenses, we would be best to control compensation packages flexibly depend on how high living standard of nation is. The related consequence for the low encourage pay system is main reason for staffs job dissatisfaction. To illustrate, according to a survey in China recent ye ars found that, the dominant reason for local Chinese staff to leaves their companies is to find a new job with high salary and better treat. Many foreign MNCs have realized this issues and establishing rewards and pay program to attract Chinese staff. Higher salary, bonus, fringe benefits, house fund etc help people have comfortable life and encourage them contribute for their company enthusiastically. Conclusion. To sum up, there are various difficulties that Fishers multinational company operating the European market, especially his international human resources activities. It could be basis strategy, recruiting advertisement, treat in pay and compensation package or even law differences. These mistakes can prevent companys success and reduce their reputation. Fisher should realize challenges and change effectively. It is valuable experience for all firms which want to develop their market. The Theory Of Human Development - 1196 Words

Biopsychosocial What biopsychosocial means? The American Psychological Association 2009 define biopsychosocial as â€Å"the systematic integration of the biological, psychological and social approaches of the study of mental health and specific mental disorders (p.48).† The human lifespan is primary base of the human grow process that start with the reproduction, the process of the human body, the brain and internal organs that are developing during the pregnancy, birth, early, middle, and late childhood, adolescence, early, middle, and late adulthood until the end of life. When I woke up I took a shower then I reckon that I should have a cup of Joe. As soon as I ate breakfast I thought to my self that I have to teach the students of May-comb. And that girl that they call scout, after that I planed what I was going to wear to school I picked out a beautiful dress. We will write a custom essay sample on Miss Caroline or any similar topic only for you Order Now I when to the bathroom to brush my hair and my teeth. Well, my first day on the job this year wasn’t how I expected. In fact, it was a terrible day. My students this year are so disrespectful! I have some little girl whose father teaches her how to read and write. I confronted her about it telling her kindly to have her father not teach her anymore, so we could start off fresh to a new year of teaching, and she lies to me! Apparently her father does not teach her anything, but I ain’t buying it! No one even learns about writing until the 3rd grade that is without the help of another person. She was even giving me lip about another person! That Walter kid or whatever his name was. The least he could have done was accept my damn quarter! I had to whip Scout or else she was going to give me more lip. That wasn’t even the worst of my troubles today! Some little kid named Burris shows up to class with lice in his damn hair! After I told him to take the day off too clean him, he stated that he’s only here for the first day. Thank god. But after that, he starts yelling at me and having an attitude. I told him that if he doesn’t leave the class immediately then I was going to call the principal. He started saying some really offense language to me that really hurt me. Thankly after he was done, he left. This crap better not is going on for the rest of this year. That girl is eventually going to tell me the truth about her father teaching her or not. If she doesn’t and I find out, there will be consequences. Today I was walking past one of my students Burris Ewell and I noticed he had cooties! I didn’t even know what one was until a kind boy named Little Chuck Little explained that it was a cootie. He kindly got me a glass of water and once I had recovered I sent Burris Ewell home and gave him a remedy to get rid of his cooties I didn’t want to other children or even myself to catch them! Oh well, I suppose that you learn something new every day. That’s what I tell my students. I’m not that surprised he got cooties though he is quite dirty. But, that’s not all that shocked me about this boy though. I found out that he and his whole family only came to school on the first day, and then never came again for the rest of the year. Burris Ewell was extremely rude to me and unfortunately I started to cry in front of my class but they were very kind to me. They comforted me and then asked me to read them a story. I’m glad that they enjoy my stories – I do have fun reading to them. I really like my pupils and I’m glad to have them as I really do love teaching. Today was very eventful and I could write so much more but someone’s knocking on my door. In the city I saw of maycomb Depression meant only that the bad times that had been going on for decades got a little bit worse. These rural areas had long been poor and undeveloped. Black people worked for low wages in the fields. White farmers were more likely to own land, but they were cash poor. It was common for children to go to school barefoot, and to suffer from ringworm and other diseases. Although automobiles had been around for some years, most farm families still depended on horses for transportation and to plow their fields. How to cite Miss Caroline, Papers
